free printable downloadable holiday card, photo greeting card

by Stacy Amoo-Mensah of name your design

Hi Everyone! It’s Stacy here from name your design. Since we’re  getting in the holiday spirit here at OMHG, I’ve created a 5×7 (folded size) photo holiday card for you to download, print and enjoy! It is formatted in a way that allows you to affix a standard wallet sized photo to the front of the card.  The inside of the card is blank for you to hand write your holiday message.  These cards fit into any standard  A7 envelope.

Your cards could be ready with these five simple steps:
1.       Download file by clicking here and print onto a sturdy piece  8.5 x 11 cardstock
2.       Trim around the border of the entire card
3.       Fold and score down the middle
4.       Adhere wallet sized photo (2.5 x 3.5) to front of card
5.       Hand write your personal message inside

name your design, itzy ritzyby Stacy Amoo-Mensah of Name Your Design

Hi Everyone! I recently returned back from a great visit to the ABC Kids Show in Las Vegas. I wasn’t exhibiting (at least not this year), but my reasons for attending were three fold:

1. To check out the scene at the show to see if developing a full blown wholesale line is in my future

2.  To support my friends and partners at Itzy Ritzy

3. To support the celebrity filled benefit to raise awareness for World Hunger Relief, sponsored by Itzy Ritzy and Yum! Brands

You may remember reading an interview on OMHG with Kelly from Itzy Ritzy earlier this year.  Itzy Ritzy sells a line of hip and stylish products for babies and toddlers (car seat covers,  high chair & shopping cart covers, nursing pads, nursing covers,  stroller liners and reusable snack bags….just to name a few).

As luck would have it, while on Twitter one day, I “bumped” into Itzy Ritzy and started following them. I soon realized that they were located in the same town as me and an instant connection was made.  Kelly and I spoke on the phone one day, and within the next 3-4 days, I was working on developing some exclusive fabrics to add to their line! I know it sounds far-fetched, but it literally happened that fast. So, just a little side note: If you are not on Twitter, you should be. It has been an essential part of growing my business and making some amazing connections.

Kelly was able to get a good feel for my design aesthetic from looking at my current designs on name your design as well as my exclusive stationery line on tiny prints. However, I had to be completely honest with her about the fact that I had NEVER attempted to design fabric before.  So, after some direction from their team as to what they were looking for, I was able to crank out a few designs. As it turns out, they decided to move forward with four of them (all of which are pictured on the products above)!

My relationship with Itzy Ritzy is ongoing.  We frequently meet to go over ideas and brainstorm on trends and future fabric designs.  It is a great partnership in the fact that we can bounce ideas off of one another and learn from each other.  After visiting with them in their booth at the ABC Kids Show, I have definitely picked up a few tips on how to properly display your product line. I can say, without a doubt, that they had one of the most amazing booths on the entire first floor at the show. Although I am not in their league when it comes to a “budget” for a show like this, they certainly set the standard for knowing how to make a huge impact on buyers and drawing attention to their products with this awesome design. Take a look at some of the pictures below:
itzy ritcy, ABC kids expo, name your designI ended my trip by attending the high profile World Hunger Relief benefit, sponsored by Itzy Ritzy and Yum! Brands at  Eve Nightclub.  Itzy Ritzy has graciously teamed up with the folks at www.fromhungertohope.com and  is selling packs of two World Hunger Relief branded snack bags for $20. Each purchase feeds 40 hungry children! You can see pics from this night by visiting Itzy Ritzy’s facebook page or take a peek at this blog post of mine for my own personal paparazzi shots! It was a great event, for a great cause.  I feel very fortunate to have partnered with such a wonderful team and am excited to expand my design footprint on more Itzy Ritzy products!

Limiting your color palette

by Stacy Amoo-Mensah, Name Your Design

I had an OMHG reader contact me a couple of months ago asking me specifically, “how do you know how to pick the perfect shade of pink in your designs…or how do you know, with confidence, that it will print exactly how you want it to look”. Hmmmmm….what a great question!

I believe I covered my initial lack of design “experience” in my post about how my business evolved. I mean, for goodness sakes, I started designing in Microsoft Publisher! However, once I mastered that and moved onto an “official” program,  Adobe Ilustrator, it took me a while to feel very comfortable navigating it and taking advantage of all the  bells and whistles that the program has to offer. One of my favorite features, being the ability to create and save custom color palettes.

Now, for those of you who were trained or went to school for design, this post may be a “no-brainer” for you…however, for someone like me who is self-taught, it took me some time to figure all of this out on my own. When I first started researching and working with commercial printers to handle my production, I was also concerned about color matching  (screen vs. printed colors).  I was told to refer to the pantone color swatches to ensure a good color match. However nice it would have been to own a pantone swatch library, I didn’t feel that I could swing a purchase with that large of price tag. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and I came up with my “own” color matching system.

In any design program, the color combinations are endless! This is wonderful, but  it can also be frustrating when trying to pick the “perfect shade”.  So, seeing as though I’m not that great at making decisions, the first thing I did was limit the color palette that I was working with to about 140 colors. I’m fairly certain that most graphic designers find that there are a handful of colors that you find yourself going back to over and over again, right? Well…me too.  So, what I did was “name” all of these colors and save them into a swatch library within Illustrator. In the screen shot below, you can see the single, highlighted swatch entitled “orange” within the main swatch library entitled “name your design”.

For 90% of the products I produce, I work with a commercial printer who runs my designs on both canvas and cover stock.   Rather than send files in to the printer and  “cross my fingers” that the colors print how I expect them too, I decided to print my own swatch library to refer to when designing.  In order to do this, I created a file with all of my swatches laid out, along with their newly appointed “name” underneath.  Because inks print differently on different forms of medium (canvas + cover stock), I had them print one of the swatch files onto card stock and the other onto canvas,  to ensure that I had an accurate representation of the colors in my library.

I can’t BEGIN to tell you how much time this has saved me while designing!  Believe it or not, I very rarely stray from these colors…I may  adjust the tint on some of them, but overall, they have proven to work through all seasons and  color trending changes!  The best part is I know EXACTLY what my finished product is going to look like before I send them to print because I have my handy printed swatches to refer back to.

I know how important it is for working mommies to make the most of their (quiet + uninterrupted) work time, so I’m always looking for ways to help streamline my work processes and maximize my time.  I hope this helps some of you too!

Show Us Your Workspace: Name Your Design

Hi there! This is Stacy again. For those of you who don’t know me very well, I need to preface this post by giving you three pieces of information.

  1. I am the mother of three boys.
  2. I spend the majority of my “work” time designing a line of stationery for tinyprints and filling orders for my online business, Name Your Design. I also work with several brides a month creating custom wedding invitations in my little paper studio.
  3. I do all of this from home.

Any of you that happen to be blessed with boys know the type of energy and activity that they can bring to your home. Basically, our entire house has become their playground… wrestling matches on the family room floor, soccer games in the hallway, tag around the dining room table, etc. There is, however, ONE room in our house that is just for me, and it’s my little studio/office/workspace.

Hi there! It’s Stacy again. I’m not sure about you, but in my house, we are READY for Spring. Living in Chicago is quite a tease this time of year.  We can have five days of warm sunshine followed by two days of snow! We’ve been cooped up long enough, and I’m looking forward to more time outside, enjoying the pretty Spring palette that will soon be painting our neighborhood.

With that said, I created a fun and vibrant 8×10 art print just for OMHG readers. I’m a huge fan of orange, and to me, this print just screams sunshine! We could all use a little bit of that now, couldn’t we?

Simply download and print this 8 x 10 art print onto a sturdy piece of 8.5 x 11 cardstock (also available in pink and blue).  The design is sized at 8 x 10 which leaves a margin perfect for framing.  Enjoy!

Hi there! My name is Stacy, and six years ago I was teaching kindergarten.  Today I own two creative businesses and have an exclusive brand of stationery on tiny*prints.

I’ve known Sara for a little over a year and was thrilled when she asked me to be one of OMHG’s monthly contributors!  I only wish there was a resource such as this when I was trying to break into the stationery business over six years ago, as it would have saved me hours and hours of research time.

I am, by no means, an expert.  However, I have learned a bit about running my creative businesses through good  old-fashioned hard work and dedication and am happy to share some of my insight with you.

With that said, the most frequent question I get about my career is, “How in the world do you go from a kindergarten teacher to a graphic designer?”  (read more…)

Today’s post focuses on growing a small business.  Below is a compilation of advice from a few of the Oh My! Handmade Goodness contributors.

  • Old school truth: Every business needs a USP (unique selling proposition). What’s yours? (Nicole Morell)
  • Deliver within your stated production time and offer excellent customer service! In this fast past world, it seems CS has taken a back seat.  Be an expert at customer service and your customers will come back.  (Stacy Amoo-Mensah)
  • Find out what your customers want by asking for feedback and ideas.  You’ll be surprised at how many are interested in contributing (especially if you offer a nice incentive or coupon for their help). (Stacy Amoo-Mensah)

I’ve noticed lately that every time the topic of my home-based, online business comes up with a new acquaintance, I start out by answering the same few questions about what I do, how it works, etc., and by the end of the conversation I’m cheering on this new friend, encouraging her to follow her passion and start her own business.

I started thinking about the advice that I find myself sharing over and over, and I asked a few of the other contributors here at Oh My! Handmade Goodness what her best tips are for anyone who’s thinking about starting an online business.  Below is a compilation of everyone’s advice (tomorrow’s post will focus on growing a small business).

  • Make sure what you choose to do is something you LOVE! Running your own business is hard work, and it helps to be obsessed with your job. (Arianne Foulks)
  • Do your research and know your competition. (Stacy Amoo-Mensah)
  • Be true to your own style. It’s ok to look at others for inspiration, but make sure you are truly plugged into YOU! Don’t try to copy the trends, they always fade. (Stacy Altiery)
