Rustic, Gender-Neutral Baby Shower

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

by Heather Mattos of Cookie Mondays

rustic, gender neutral baby shower featuring yellow and khaki

Last weekend my mom and her best friend, Audrey (both San Diego designers) threw me the most amazing baby shower luncheon. No detail was overlooked! We’re expecting a little boy, but don’t expect to see baby blue or cliché, cutesie boy themes here! The rustic, shabby chic feel with creamy whites and sunny yellows are perfect for a gender-neutral party.

Handmade Details:

  • Scalloped border invites and custom 2.5″ x 3.75″ stickers for coordinating water bottle labels by sarah + abraham.
  • Wooden frames from Ikea (with bright paper inserted) and paper take-out boxes served as plates and salad containers. We used scalloping shears to trim the top edges of the boxes.
  • Simple arrangements of white hydrangeas & ranunculus, and yellow pom poms in vintage glass bottles were gorgeous atop a brown parchment table liner. Single heads of cauliflower between the bottles added an organic touch.
  • Bales of hay flanking the tables, topped with natural burlap made a fun alternative to chairs, and vintage, tattered lampshades replaced the ever-popular paper lantern or tissue pom-pom!
  • Old-fashioned typewriter style menus, custom designed by MKL designs, were clipped onto old book covers.
  • For favors, I made Ruffled Sunglasses Cases with name tags tied on, which completed each place setting.
  • Cupcakes homemade using Sprinkles mix and a basic vanilla bean buttercream sweetened the deal. Forget the gifts… what preggo mama doesn’t appreciate a good cupcake?!

Handmade Finds: Hello Frosting

Edible frosting decals by Hello Frosting

I recently came across a new company called Hello Frosting owned by Erin McGinley, a former events professional turned stay-at-home mom, who is the baker, photographer, and sometimes designer behind these edible icing decals. I was instantly smitten! The decals are printed on thin sheets of icing using food-grade inks and merge with your frosting, producing a completely smooth texture which you can easily cut or bite through.

You’ve probably seen this printing method used on “photo birthday cakes”, but I think the way that Erin’s using this technology with modern designs is much, much cuter!

Luckily I saw these right around the time I was starting to plan my son, Jack’s, upcoming football-themed birthday party, so I spoke with Erin, and she was happy to accommodate my request for some football-themed decals to use on cupcakes and sugar cookie party favors. The designs she came up with are prefect, including some with a football helmet in Chicago Bears colors with his name and the number 7 (that’s how old he’s turning). Jack loves them, and I’m sure they’ll be a big hit at the party!

Woodland-themed Baby Shower

Thursday, April 15, 2010

by Catherine Young of Bumpkin Bears & Friends

I was so delighted when I was recently asked to design some invitations and gift tags based on my Time for an Adventure print for a woodland-themed baby shower.

So much thought went into all the details for this evening baby shower.  The entire room was turned into an enchanting wonderland. Branches were adorned with fairy lights and sparkling crystal tear drops.  Fir cones were turned into Garlands strung across the ceiling along with these felt ball garlands from Made Mary.

Deb’s Cookies provided mushroom-shaped cookies and little heart shaped cookies which were placed in gift bags adorned with Bumpkin Tags, kept company by a curious deer and framed print. Glass domes were filled with moss and little figurines. Owls sat wisely on chairs, with cheeky rabbits and squirrels next to porcelain acorns and collected logs.

A beautiful antique pram escorting a very special family teddy bear took pride of place! Hanging from the pram was this adorable Bird Mobile from Laika Handknits and Crochet.

Walls were decorated with these beautiful fabric wall stickers from Love Mae Store. The great thing about many of these items is that after the shower they were used to decorate the baby boy’s nursery.

As if this wasn’t enough, the food was just delightful. The Something Sweet Cake Studio did a magical job creating cupcakes with butterflies floating atop them and an outstanding cake, almost too beautiful to eat!

Alongside the cake were Owl shaped cookies from Sugar Cookie Couture, extraordinarily realistic mushroom meringues from Pastry Pixie, and delicious Garden Wave Gourmet Brownies from The Cats Meow Favors.

If you’re looking to create a magical baby shower or birthday party, suitable for both boys and girls, try looking to nature for some fun inspiration! And tomorrow Meg from olliegraphic will be sharing a free download so you can print your own invitations for a woodland-themed party.

Wizard of Oz Birthday Party

Monday, April 12, 2010

by Heather Mattos of Cookie Mondays

Choosing a Wizard of Oz theme was a no-brainer when it came time to plan my Dorothy-obsessed daughter, Camden’s third birthday party.  I decided to focus on blue gingham, red sparkles, and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in a few simple handmade elements to pull it all together.

First stop: sarah + abraham for adorable invites.  I can’t get enough of the olliegraphic customizable children, so I aimed for a Dorothy-ized Camden (braids, blue dress, red shoes).

They were perfect as is, but just for fun I attached a tiny scrap of blue gingham fabric to the dress (double stick tape and a few stitches) and red glitter to the shoes (glitter glue with a tiny paint brush).

For her actual party outfit, we wanted something beyond the basic Dorothy dress that she pulls out of the dress-up box every single day!  I made a ruffley skirt, similar to this one, complete with blue tulle and rainbow ribbon, and a coordinating ‘3’ tee and hair bow.

All the little girls arrived in ruby slippers!

Bright yellow chalk transformed our front path into the yellow brick road.  Dozens of colorful floating balloons made the ceiling a rainbow.  I sewed tablecloths and basket liners out of more gingham fabric (which is very inexpensive at Joann Fabric).

Favors were ‘Toto baskets’, including stickers and coloring books from the dollar bin at Michaels , rainbow Skittles and crayons, and a shiny red apple (remember the talking apple trees scene?!)

But I think the highlight of the party may very well have been the cake.  Red and sparkly on the outside… rainbow on the inside.  We used this super easy technique.

Balloons, and cake, and friends, OH MY!  What could be more fun?  {Wicked witches not included.}

Football-Themed Birthday Party

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

by Sara Tams of sarah + abraham

My son’s turning seven next month, and he has his heart set on a football-themed birthday party. I wasn’t too excited about it until I started looking online for inspiration. I found all kinds of fun ideas like decorate-your-own jersey, face painting, a Superbowl-style buffet, and a football throwing contest (hang a sheet in the backyard with big holes cut in it and assign point values for each target).

When I searched for football items on Etsy, that’s when the real fun began – here’s a sampling of what I found (the barrette is for my daughter!)

1. Personalized Birthday Jersey, $18.99 at Little One Boutique

2. Football Cookies, $29.95 for two dozen at Angel Food

3. Superbowl Cupcake Toppers, $9 for 12 at Belleza e Luce

4. Football Fondant Cupcake Toppers, $12 for a dozen at Two Sugar Babies

5. Personalized Custom Birthday Cake Topper, $17 at The Peanut Butter Bandit

6. Chocolate Football Lolipops, $4 for a set of 4 at Sweet Celebrations

7. Jumbo Rainbow Layered Football Crayon, $4 each at Design-A-Crayon

8. Football Felt Hair Clip, $4.95 at Hair Bow Holders

Reptile-themed birthday party

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

by Caroline Nelson of Little Cupcakes Company

Kids birthday parties are one of my favorite things to plan and organize.

My kids are are 2 years (and 2 days) apart – so getting TWO parties for the price of ONE – is fabulous! The first year we had an “Under the Sea” party which featured a girl dressed as Ariel who captivated the kids with a very interesting magic show. The second year, we did a Farm Party that featured a full Petting Zoo in our backyard – Llama and all!

This year, I asked my daughter, Campbell (5), and my son, Charlie (3), what kind of party they wanted, and after much deliberation we decided on a Reptile Party. Yes, Reptiles!!  I contacted The Creature Teacher, and we were all set to go!

Next up was the invitation, which is one of my favorite parts of the party planning process.   With the help of Meg at olliegraphic and Sara at sarah + abraham we came up with some adorable invites! I love them so much!
